POSITION SUMMARY
The Safety Manager provides leadership for all safety operations within an assigned area of a mega project, typically supporting approximately 500 craft workers while leading a team of 8-15 Safety Technicians and Safety Representatives. Reporting directly to the Project Site Safety Manager, this role serves as the primary safety leader for the assigned work area and partners closely with Project Managers, Superintendents, craft leadership, and subcontractors to ensure work is executed safely while advancing Baker Construction's Incident and Injury Free (IIF) culture.
The Safety Manager drives proactive risk management, develops safety personnel, influences operational decision-making, and ensures compliance with Baker standards, regulatory requirements, and client expectations.

Experience Requirements
- 10-15 years of progressive construction safety experience.
- 5-8 years of experience supporting large commercial, industrial, heavy civil, manufacturing, semiconductor, data center, or other complex construction projects.
- 3-7 years of experience leading and developing Safety Representatives, Safety Technicians, Safety Coordinators, or similar safety professionals.
- Demonstrated experience supporting projects with 300–700 craft workers, multiple subcontractors, and concurrent high-risk construction activities.
- Strong knowledge of concrete construction, heavy civil, industrial, manufacturing, semiconductor, or other complex construction environments.
- Proven ability to build trusted partnerships with project leadership while coaching craft professionals and subcontractors on safe work practices.
- Experience implementing leading indicators, conducting trend analysis, managing corrective actions, leading incident investigations, and driving continuous improvement initiatives.
- Comprehensive knowledge of OSHA regulations and construction safety practices including:
- Fall Protection
- Confined Space
- Crane and Rigging Operations
- Excavation and Trenching
- Silica Exposure
- Electrical Safety
- Lockout/Tagout
- Mobile Equipment
- Hazard Recognition and Risk Assessment
- Other high-risk construction activities
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
Safety Leadership
- Lead all safety operations within an assigned project area supporting approximately 500 craft workers.
- Serve as the primary safety resource for Project Managers, Superintendents, and field leadership.
- Maintain a visible field presence through routine engagement, observations, coaching, and inspections.
- Promote Baker Construction's Incident and Injury Free (IIF) culture through leadership, accountability, and positive engagement.
- Directly supervise and develop a team of 8-15 Safety Representatives.
- Provide coaching, mentoring, performance feedback, and career development.
- Establish clear expectations while fostering accountability and professional growth.
- Develop future safety leaders through succession planning and leadership development.
- Integrate safety into daily work planning, pre-task planning, and operational execution.
- Conduct field observations, audits, inspections, and behavioral coaching.
- Identify hazards and ensure timely implementation of corrective actions.
- Monitor project safety performance using leading and lagging indicators.
- Analyze trends and communicate actionable recommendations to project leadership.
- Coordinate emergency preparedness activities and emergency response planning.
- Ensure compliance with Baker Construction safety standards, OSHA regulations, and client-specific requirements.
- Lead incident investigations, root cause analyses, and corrective action development.
- Verify corrective actions are implemented and sustained.
- Support subcontractor safety management through onboarding, oversight, and performance evaluations.
- Coordinate project safety orientations and ongoing training initiatives.
- Partner with the Mega Project Site Safety Manager to implement project-wide safety initiatives.
- Support strategic planning for project safety performance and continuous improvement.
- Contribute to company-wide safety programs, standardization efforts, and best practice development.
- Bachelor's degree in Occupational Safety, Construction Management, Engineering, or a related field (or equivalent combination of education and experience).
- OSHA 500 Trainer certification or equivalent.
- Professional certification preferred:
- Certified Safety Professional (CSP)
- Construction Health and Safety Technician (CHST)
- Associate Safety Professional (ASP)
- Safety Management Specialist (SMS)
- CPR/First Aid/AED Instructor certification preferred.
- Experience utilizing digital safety management systems, reporting platforms, and construction technology solutions.
- Visible field leadership with strong credibility among craft professionals.
- Coaching and mentoring that develops high-performing safety teams.
- Exceptional communication, collaboration, and conflict resolution skills.
- Data-driven decision making with strong analytical abilities.
- Ability to influence operational leaders while maintaining accountability.
- Excellent organizational and planning skills capable of managing multiple work fronts simultaneously.
- Sound judgment in high-pressure environments and complex construction operations.
